On August 6, 1988, Oakland Athletics outfielder Jose Canseco became the eleventh player in major league history to hit thirty home runs and steal thirty bases during a season. Canseco, with thirty-one home runs, stole second base with one out during the ninth inning for his thirtieth as the A's edged the Seattle Mariners 5 - 4.

In 1986 Jose Canseco won the Rookie of the Year Award , during this season, he won the Most Valuable Player Award unanimously, and on May 26, 1993, he was hit on the head with a ball that bounced out of the park for a home run!
