On September 3, 1990, Bobby Thigpen set a new major league record with his forty-seventh save in a 4-2 Chicago White Sox victory over the Kansas City Royals. Thigpen broke the record set by Dave Righetti of the New York Yankees in 1986 and went on to finish the season with fifty-seven saves!
