The St. Louis Brown Stockings left the National League in 1877 amidst a game fixing scandal. The were playing in the Union Association and in 1885 moved over into the National League giving St. Louis back their franchise.

What happened to the St. Louis Maroons? On August 18, 1886, the owner, Henry Lucas, announced his decision to leave the baseball business as the franchise had costed him nearly thirty thousand dollars of debt in three years.
