Fred Abbott Stats

Fred Abbott was born on Thursday, October 22, 1874, in Versailles, Ohio. Abbott was 28 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 25, 1903, with the Cleveland Blues. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Fred Abbott baseball stats page.

"In the absence of numerous players who now dot cots in various hospital wards, (Bill) Armour uses Mr. (Fred) Abbott, a catcher, at first base. There are a whole lot of things about clutching grounders that Mr. Abbott has yet to learn. His ignorance cost ( Bill ) Bernhard a shut-out, and all but blew the game, ( Matty ) McIntyre's hit in the fifth, which drove in two runs, after two were out, being easy money for an experienced performer around the first cushion. The best Abbott could do was make a desperate slide-for-life bluff. This is not said in censure as, for a man not built for the part, and raw to the role, the Cleveland sub played a very creditable game." - The Detroit Free Press (07/03/1904, Split Even in Double Header: Detroit and Cleveland Each Captured a Game , Page 6)
