Bobby Avila Stats

Bobby Avila was born on Wednesday, April 2, 1924, in Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico. Avila was 25 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 30, 1949, with the Cleveland Indians. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Bobby Avila baseball stats page.

"Like Bob Lemon, Al Rosen, and Bob Feller, Mexico's Bobby Avila was one of Cleveland's true stars of the 1950s. That status was remarkable considering that Avila was a professional soccer player - and dreamed of being a bull fighter - before he learned how to play baseball from a book authored by former big league pitcher Jack Coombs." - Baseball: The Biographical Encyclopedia (Total/Sports Illustrated, 2000)

Did you know that Bobby Avila was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players ever? As part of the club’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2001, a panel of veteran baseball writers, historians and executives selected a roster of the Top 100 Greatest Indians and Avila was named one of the nine second basemen.

In 1954 , Hank Bauer slid into second base, breaking the thumb of Bobby Avila. Despite the injury, Avila swung a sweet bat, saying, "I started to hit well early, and once you're hitting well you build confidence. I felt like I could hit anybody." Beto did hit everybody that year, winning a batting championship , the first Latin-born player to win a Major League batting title , the last Cleveland Indians hitter to lead the American League in batting average .
