" Steve Trachsel was pitching and I led off with a single. I'm pretty sure I doubled later in the inning, but I'm not sure if Trachsel Cubs , Kerry Wood , Kevin Tapani , Jon Lieber and I were always trying to see who the better hitter was. We took pride in it." - Jason Bere in a Jason Bere Interview (David Laurila, Baseball Almanac, 2005)

In 1994, Jason Bere finished the season with an American League leading .857 winning percentage, the seventh Chicago White Sox twirler to best all junior circuit pitchers, joining Bob Shaw (1959), Dick Donovan (.727), Sandy Consuegra (.842), Eddie Cicotte (.806), Ed Walsh (.727) and Clark Griffith (.774).

When Eddie Cicotte finished the 1919 season with an .806 winning percentage, he became the first White Sox to reach the .800 plateau, setting a new franchise record. When Sandy Consuegra finished the 1954 season with an .842 winning percentage, he broke Cicotte's thirty-five year old record. When Jason Bere finished the 1994 season with a .857 winning percentage, it was the best ever by a White Sox ; however, it was also a strike-shortened season. [ MLB.com Sortable Stats ]

A year earlier, Jason Bere won twelve games during his rookie season, lost only five, finishing with the fourth best winning percentage, and runner-up for Rookie of the Year . Do you remember what California Angel right-fielder won? Clue, he hit thirty-one home runs. [ Answer ]

On July 5, 2001 , Jason Bere had a memorable day at the park, beating the Mets in Shea Stadium, not allowing a hit for five innings, AND getting two hits himself in the same inning! Our favorite news clipping:
