Paul Blair Stats

Paul Blair was born on Tuesday, February 1, 1944, in Cushing, Oklahoma. Blair was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 9, 1964, with the Baltimore Orioles. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Paul Blair baseball stats page.

"He (Paul Blair) played very shallow. People talked about how Willie Mays played shallow, and Paul did the same thing. He played with assuredness. When you talk about the greatest defensive center fielders, he was right in the mix. With me in left and Frank Robinson in right, we played toward the lines and gave him a lot of room. He could really go get it." - Teammate Don Buford (AP Wire, 12/27/2013, 'Former CF Paul Blair dies at 69', Source )

Did you know Paul Blair was the first player from the Baltimore Orioles (1954-today) to hit an inside the park grand slam? On August 26, 1973 , Jim Palmer versus Paul Splittorff , Blair hit a rocket into the gap where Kansas City Royals outfielders Amos Otis and Steve Hovley collided in a mid-air collision as both attempted to reach the liner.

Paul Blair, Inside the Park Grand Slam
Paul Blair | Cumberland Evening Times | August 27, 1973 | Page 11
Paul Blair was the first player in Major League history to have 5-hits in a postseason game when he went 5-for-6 with 2 singles, 2 doubles and 1 home run (not to mention 5 RBI and a run scored) versus the Minnesota Twins in the third game of the American League Championship Series ( A.L.C.S. ) on October 6, 1969 .

Paul Blair had a historic regular season as well (in 1969 ) - the first Baltimore Orioles player with a 20-20 season (20-or-more home runs and 20-or-more stolen bases). Even when taking into account their franchise history ( St. Louis Browns , 1902-1953), he was only the second 20-20 player in team history, joining Ken Williams ( 1921 & 1922 ).

Motormouth was a nickname Blair received in the minors and he described the day it was bestowed upon him in The Sun Magazine (The Baltimore Sun, June 2, 1968), "We were coming out of the dugout and Curt Motton and I were arguing. We were hitting about .320 apiece, but I had outhit him the day before - 4-for-4, I think it was - and I was reminding Curt about it. (Harry) Dunlop heard us and said, ' Motton , Blair's getting to be as bad as a motor, isn't he?" Blair was big league hitter, a big league talker and a big league fielder, one of the best defensive oufielders of his era in our opinion, truly excellent range, and brilliant at tracking fly balls. Blair actually seemed to taunt hitters by playing shallow, then running down balls hit over his head. That skill, and his defensive ability in center field, won him eight Gold Gloves , including seven consecutive from 1969 to 1975.
