Frank Bolling Stats

Frank Bolling was born on Monday, November 16, 1931, in Mobile, Alabama. Bolling was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 13, 1954, with the Detroit Tigers. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Frank Bolling baseball stats page.

"Basically the same player as Bill Mazeroski , except that Mazeroski's career was four years longer and he was just a hair quicker on the double play. Bolling was damn good, though. Bolling was always perceived, perhaps unfairly, as a player of unlimited ability. Tom Meany in the May, 1961, edition of Sport Magazine recalled that Harry Craft had once invited a group of reporters to name the five most talented players in the American League. The reporters suggested ( Mickey ) Mantle and ( Al ) Kaline . 'If you're all through,' Craft said when they were, 'I've got my man. Frank Bolling, the Tigers second baseman. He's magnificent. He can become one of the big men in the game.'" - Baseball Historian Bill James in The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract (Free Press Publishing, June 2003, Top 100 Second Baseman. #65 Frank Bolling , Page 523)

In 1958, Frank Bolling led all American League second baseman in assists (445), taking his position in 154 games (second most), recording 342 putouts (third most), and turning 109 double plays (third most). His fielding percentage (.985) was also tops in the junior circuit, earning him a Gold Glove Award , the first ever won by a Detroit Tigers second baseman. Do you remember who was second? [ Answer ]

On April 12, 1966 , Frank Bolling jogged out onto the field in Atlanta Stadium, took his customary position at second base, joining Tony Cloninger (P), Joe Torre (C), Lee Thomas (1B), Eddie Mathews (3B), Denis Menke (SS), Rico Carty (LF), Felipe Alou (CF), and Hank Aaron (RF) - the first players to take the field in Atlanta Braves uniforms .

Did you know that Frank Bolling was a career second baseman? Why did we italicize career, or even mention this as a did you know? Because Frank never played another defensive position in his career, appearing on the field 1,518 times, only at second base - the thirty-sixth most games played at second base in baseball history. The only players who ever took the field at second more often than Frank, who also never played another defensive position, were Luis Castillo (1,683), Larry Doyle (1,728), Bobby Doerr (1,852), and Lou Whitaker (2,308).
