Dave Brain Stats

Dave Brain was born on Friday, January 24, 1879, in Hereford, England. Brain was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 24, 1901, with the Chicago White Stockings. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Dave Brain baseball stats page.

"There was joy in Boston when Dave Brain returned to the reservation. Base ball is more than a pastime with Mr. Brain; it is a serious undertaking and when the management decided that he could live on less this season than last he emitted a sound like the exhaust on an old fashioned gasoline engine. 'Not for mine,' said David. Then he put on the paint of war, wrapped his blanket about him and strode off the reservation. Manager Tenney wired, wept and waited, but David returned not. Then the management wilted and the salary cut was restored and the prodigal came home. Mr. Brain's home is in Chicago, not far from the river. This probably accounts for the fact that he loved to travel in the summer time. Mr. Brain is not regarded as a heavy sticker except on the salary question. Last season he batted .247, but the way he covered ground in the vicinity of third base endeared him to the hearts of the home fans. Mr. Brain originated the saying: 'What matters is that a man makes a base hit and is later caught asleep off first base.'" - The Wilkes-Barre Leader (May 5, 1906, Sidelights On Well Known Ball Players , Page 8)
