"There was a day when (Joe) Bush could get by on sheer speed. Those were the years he picked up the nickname of 'Bullet Joe.' Nowadays, however, Bush couples speed with his fork ball and a few, a very few, judiciously placed curves." - Sportswriter F.C. Lane in Baseball Magazine (February 1923)

Did you know that Bullet Joe Bush was 20 years, 10 months, and 12 days old when he defeated the New York Giants 8-2 in Game 3 of the 1913 World Series - the youngest pitcher in Major League history to win a World Series game (a tad younger than Jim Palmer at 20 years, 11 months, 21 days who is the youngest pitcher to throw a complete game shutout which he did during Game 2 of the 1966 World Series )?

On August 22, 1916 , Bullet Joe Bush pitched a complete game shutout versus the Detroit Tigers at Shibe Park. Three days later, on August 25, 1916 , Bullet Joe pitched again, lasted three innings, and lost 10-2. Did the Athletics let him rest? No, they started him again, the following day, and on August 26, 1916 , Bush no-hit the Indians:

The 1916 Philadelphia Athletics were a hopeless, last-place club. Joe Bush ended their record-tying 20-game losing streak by beating Detroit August 9, 1916 , and had a 13-20 record when he faced the sixth-place Cleveland Indians and Stan Coveleski on Saturday, August 26 , before 5000 fans in Shibe Park. The day before, Bush had been knocked out of the box by the Indians in three innings.

Bush was a fastball pitcher who seemed to tie himself in knots and then unwind when he delivered the ball. His start in this game was inauspicious as he walked Jack Graney , and eagle-eyed leadoff man who drew more than 100 walks this season, on a 3-1 pitch. Terry Turner sacrificed but Bush fanned both Tris Speaker and Bobby Roth .

Not another Indian reached base, and Bush allowed few hard hit balls. Bill Wambsganss led off the second with a grounder to deep short which Whitey Witt grabbed. His throw was wide but first baseman Stuffy McInnis came off the bag and tagged Wamby just before he reached first.

With one out in the fourth, Witt made a fast play on Speaker's grounder and, when Roth followed with a bounder to third, McInnis made a nifty pickup of Charlie Pick's low throw. After Wambsganss fanned on three pitches at the start of the fifth, Chick Gandil bunted toward third. Pick made a spectacular play and threw him out. Ray Chapman then struck out.

In the sixth, Steve O'Neill grounded to second. Danny Moeller batted for Coveleski and lined to right, and Graney bounced to first. Turner hit a short fly to left in the seventh, Speaker's well-hit ball was caught by Amos Strunk in center and Roth flied to center.

Bush breezed through the eighth, retiring the Indians on a fly to left and two pop-ups. Pitching carefully in the ninth, Bush fanned O'Neill on a 3-2 pitch. Bob Coleman , a reserve catcher who managed for the Boston Braves in 1944 and 1945, batted for relief pitcher Fritz Coumbe and also fanned on a 3-2 pitch. Graney hit the first pitch hard to left but it was a foul. After taking two balls, Graney lifted a high foul outside first base, and McInnis caught it to end the game.

The A's scored once in the second on Wally Schang's triple and McInnis ' single. They added another in the fourth. Jimmy Walsh beat out a hit to short. Strunk bunted but forced Walsh at second. Schang beat out a bunt and Nap Lajoie , playing his last major league game , walked to load the bases. McInnis ' squeeze bunt scored Strunk .

In the fifth, Val Picinich and Bush doubled, Witt tripled to left center and scored on Walsh's sacrifice fly to center.

Bush finished the season with a 15-24 record, scoring more than 40 percent of the A's victories. The Macks lost a record 117 games.

Joe Bush - the billiard player (see article above) - only had one twenty-win season, a 26-7 mark for the Bronx Bombers in 1922, but that same year he hit .326 making him only the second Yankees ' pitcher with a 20-win season who also batted at least .300. The first was one year earlier, by Carl Mays , who went 27-9 and hit .343.
