"That is an amazing thing (winning the 2005 Cy Young Award ). I was just telling my wife after I found out that I won, you think about the Cardinals organization and the history of this organization, how many people, how may pitchers came through this organization, how many great pitchers came through this organization, how many great seasons all those guys had, and to be the only one besides Mr. Gibson to win the Cy Young is crazy. This organization has been around for a long time with a lot of great history, a lot of great pitchers, and to be in that company is just crazy." - Chris Carpenter on MLB.com (Matthew Leach, 11/10/2005)

Did you know that when Chris Carpenter won the 2005 Cy Young Award , he was only the second St. Louis Cardinals pitcher to ever receive the honor, following two-time (1968, 1970) recipient / hall of fame Bob Gibson ? Did you know no Card since Carp has won?

Did you know that four years later (in 2009), Chris Carpenter won an ERA Title ? Did you know he was the last Cardinal pitcher to lead all National League pitchers in earned run average? [ Year-by-Year ERA Leaders ]

On April 1, 2007 , Chris Carpenter made his third consecutive Opening Day start ( April 5, 2005 & April 3, 2006 ). St. Louis lost 1-6 to the New York Mets , Carpenter injured his arm, lost his first Opening Day game, and did not appear in another big league game that season - the first Cardinals ' twirler to start an Opening Day game, but miss the remainder of the season.

In 2009, a healthy Chris Carpenter - who underwent Tommy John Surgery in 2008 - made a tremendous comeback, winning 7, losing 4, a league leading .810 winning percentage, a career best 2.24 ERA, and an errorless fielding performance (1.000 fielding percentage). A comeback that earned him the Players Choice Comeback Player of the Year Award , the Major League Baseball Comeback Player of the Year Award and his second Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year Award (the first National League pitcher to win twice).
