" (Sparky) Lyle explains that when he first joined the Yankees, he was paired with catcher John Ellis, who had the habit of spitting tobacco juice on the floor between their beds. 'One night I woke up and stepped right in it and that was enough,' Lyle says. 'The next night I put in a chew and spit on the floor where he would get up. In the morning he did and . . . we reached an understanding." - Sportswriter Roger Rubin on NYDailyNews.com ("Riding Baseball's Road to Nowhere Trip Never Ends for Homeless Independent Team", 08-17-1998, Source )

Did you know that John Ellis was the first designated hitter in Cleveland Indians history (1973)? Ellis had his best season in 1974, when he hit .285 (22nd in the AL), had a slugging percentage of .421 (23rd in the AL), 23 doubles (25th in AL), and 64 RBIs in only 128 games - AND that same year, Ellis caught Dick Bosman's no-hitter on July 19, 1974 .

John Ellis hit sixty-nine career home runs off fifty-four different pitchers in thirteen different ballparks. His first homer, on May 17, 1969 , off Bob Priddy , had to be one of his his most memorable, as it was the only inside-the-park home run he ever hit and he was making his Major League debut (with the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium )!
