Freddie Fitzsimmons Stats

Freddie Fitzsimmons was born on Sunday, July 28, 1901, in Mishawaka, Indiana. Fitzsimmons was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on August 12, 1925, with the New York Giants. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Freddie Fitzsimmons baseball stats page.

"When Fitz was good he used to give you two knucklers and then come through with a high fast ball. The next time you would look for the fast one he'd throw another knuckler. He was a whizz at giving you the pitch you weren't looking for at that particular time." - Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett in Baseball Magazine (November 1940)

Did you know that when Freddie Fitzsimmons finished the season in 1940, he had sixteen wins, only two losses, and a Dodgers franchise record for best winning percentage in team history, .889 W-L% (minimum 15 wins)? Skipper Leo Durocher said the year, "I wish we had nine guys like Fitz. We'd never lose." Since Fat Freddie, only Preacher Roe (22 wins / 3 losses / .880 W-L% / 1951), and Clayton Kershaw (21 wins / 3 losses / .875 W-L% / 2014), have threatened the record.

Freddie Fitzsimmons led the National League in winning percentage with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940, and with the New York Giants in 1930, both former New York based franchises that relocated to the west coast. The only other pitcher to duplicate that unique feat was Hall of Fame righty Joe McGinnity , who led the NL with Brooklyn in 1900 and New York in 1904.

The Giants record for double plays in a season by a pitcher was tied by Kirk Rueter in 2001, eleven, set originally by Art Nehf in 1920. Both of those record setting pitchers were lefties. Freddie Fitzsimmons holds the team record for most double plays in a season by a right-handed pitcher, with ten, accomplished first in 1932, then tied once after, by him, in 1934!

Freddie Fitzsimmons hung up his cleats in 1943, having set the Major League record for most double plays turned by a pitcher in baseball history (79). Fitzsimmons took over the record set originally by hall of famer Burleigh Grimes (74) and held the record until he was passed by three future hall of famers, Warren Spahn (82), Phil Niekro (83) and the current record holder, Greg Maddux (89).
