The 1964 Philadelphia Phillies tied a seventy-nine year old National League record when the team took part in three triple plays during the same season, the first being on May 17, 1964 . During the fifth inning, runners on first ( Walt Williams ) and second ( Rusty Staub ), Herrnstein fielded a ground ball hit in the gap by Jerry Grote . He quickly threw the pill to shortstop Bobby Wine , who was covering second base (out #1). Wine threw it back to John to get Grote at first base (out #2). Rusty , who was trying to score from second, was thrown out at home (out #3) by Herrnstein, who relayed the ball cleanly to Gus Triandos .
