"This was demonstrated when the Yankees declared they didn't really need ( Joe ) DiMaggio to keep winning pennants since Myril Hoag was hitting .352 in spring training. Myril Hoag? While DiMaggio was supervising the wait staff's distribution of lasagna in Frisco, Hoag was holding down center field in St. Petersburg. His bat was making a good case for the Yankees to keep him on the regular-season roster once more year. Hoag had been a member of the Yankees since 1931 and anyone who watched the team realized he was not going to be the second coming of DiMaggio . He was not even the first coming of Melky Cabrera ." - Author Lew Freedman in DiMaggio's Yankees: A History of the 1936-1944 Dynasty (McFarland Publishing, 09/21/2011, Page 82)
