"Every team has an underrated player, a man who isn't a most valuable player but a most valued player. Minnesota has one and his name is James William Holt. Jim Holt also is the team's most anonymous player. He plays a lot, but he isn't publicized a lot. To the fans in the stands, he is the Twins ' Unknown Outfielder." - Sports Writer Bob Fowler in The Sporting News (05/29/1971, Whatever the Twins Need, Hustling Holt Can Provide , Page 15)

James William Holt was a Major League Baseball player who played for the Minnesota Twins (1968-1974) and Oakland Athletics (1974-1976). Jim, his nickname, enlisted in the United States Army in August 1961, a year after graduating from Graham High School (known then as Graham Colored High School). Holt was 5-11 and weighed only 135 at the time, receiving little interest due to his size, but he gained sixty pounds while in the service, played baseball for a base team in Germany, and was signed in 1966, after taking a 30-day leave to attend Spring Training with the the Kansas City Athletics !

Did you know that Jim Holt served during the Vietnam War? He is one of fifty-four former Major League baseball players who are also veterans of the Vietnam War. A complete list of those who served their country in the armed forces during the Vietnam War appears below:
