Joe Kelley Stats

Joe Kelley was born on Saturday, December 9, 1871, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kelley was 19 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 27, 1891, with the Boston Beaneaters. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Joe Kelley baseball stats page.

"Joe (Kelley) had no prominent weakness. He was fast on the bases, could hit the ball hard and was as graceful an outfielder as one would care to see. He covered an immense amount of ground and had the necessary faculty, so prominent in ( Tris ) Speaker and others, of being able to place himself where the batter would likely hit the ball." - John McGraw in More Ghosts in the Gallery: Another Sixteen Little-Known Greats at Cooperstown (David L. Fleitz, McFarland Publishing, 04/03/2007, Page 121)

In 1883 Francis Richter founded the Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887 Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914 Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914). In that historic book Richter selected the greatest players in each position in each decade:
