"Will success spoil Mike Kilkenny? Will the former wit of the mound became an aloof star? Well, Mike Kilkenny has changed some. The Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds are at Paterson Field waiting to play an exhibition game that never came to pass. The first person to be spotted is Kilkenny, standing against the fence chatting with a Montgomery friend. Kilkenny is different. It's the clothes. Double-breasted navy blue blazer, gold shirt, gold slacks, navy blue tie. This is Mike Kilkenny? If so, he has gone suburban. But, as somebody once said, clothes don't necessarily make the man. Before jumping to conclusions, you must give him the verbal test. 'Hey, Kilkenny. What's with all these fancy clothes? Whatever happened to the blue jeans and T-shirt?' His reaction to this barb should tell if this is the real Mike Kilkenny. 'I have to dress like this. I'm a big leaguer now,' he says flippantly. 'And speaking of clothes, that's a nice looking shirt you have on. Too bad you couldn't afford a pair of trousers.' Mike Kilkenny, the inner soul, has not changed. hooray." - Staff Writer Ray Holliman in The Montgomery Advertiser (04/07/1969, Same Old Kilkenny , Page 11)

Michael David Kilkenny was a Major League Baseball player for the Detroit Tigers 1972 ), Oakland Athletics ( 1972 ), San Diego Padres ( 1972 ), and Cleveland Indians ( 1972 1973). Why is 1972 bold faced? Because, Kilkenny tied the Major League record for most teams played-for during the same season that year - and even more incredible, his Topps Baseball Card (below), which was printed before the season started, had that trivia question on the back of it!

Mike Kilkenny Baseball Card
Mike Kilkenny | 1972 Topps Baseball Card (#337 | Checklist ) | Baseball Almanac Collection
Mike Kilkenny surrendered 39 home runs during his career, to 37 different batters, in 12 different ballparks. One of the most memorable occurred on September 13, 1971 , in the first inning, during a doubleheader at Memorial Stadium - as it happened to be the 499th career home run for a future hall of famer slugger, who joined the 500 Home Runs Club in Game 2 ! Who was it? [ Answer ]

Did you know that the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association started selecting a team specific, Detroit Tiger Rookie of the Year Award , in 1969, and Mike Kilkenny was their first ever selection?
