Bobby Knoop Stats

Bobby Knoop was born on Tuesday, October 18, 1938, in Sioux City, Iowa. Knoop was 25 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 13, 1964, with the Los Angeles Angels. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Bobby Knoop baseball stats page.

"Close your eyes, and you can still see him ranging halfway into right field to swallow up a ground ball and throw the batter out at first. Or imagine him moving smoothly across second base to make a flawless pivot and complete the double play. Bobby Knoop was all about the leather. His glove was permanently golden. He remains the finest defensive second baseman in franchise history and one of the best in baseball during his era. Knoop and Fregosi were magical around the bag, forming the finest double play combination in the American League. 'I watched Bobby make plays on his head, literally,' said ( Albie ) Pearson . 'That guy could flat play infield. He and Fregosi had a very strong tie on and off the field. They were buds and they went everywhere together. On the field, it seemed to pay off. They had like a sixth sense with one another. I don't care how long I've watched baseball. They were the best double play combination I've seen anywhere.'" - Author Steve Bisheff in Tales from the Angels Dugout: A Collection of the Greatest Angels Stories Ever Told (Sports Publishing, Bobby Knoop , 06/05/2012)

Bobby Knoop played more games at second base in the American League (AL) in 1966, 1967, and 1968. During those same three years, Knoop also turned more double plays than any other AL second baseman, and was one of the top two in putouts, assists, and chances, earning Bobby three Gold Glove Awards - the first ever won by an Angels second baseman !

Bobby Knoop, and his double play partner, shortstop Jim Fregosi , each collected a Gold Glove in 1967, only the third double play duo in baseball history to each win a Gold Glove for the same team in the same season. Duos who came before Knoop- Fregosi were Gene Alley (SS) and Bill Mazeroski (2B), 1966-1967, and Luis Aparicio (SS) and Nellie Fox (2B), 1959-1960.

Did you know that when Bobby Knoop legged-out eleven triple in 1966 , one more than Bert Campaneris had that season ( Top 25 ), he led the junior circuit, and became the first league leading Angels player? [ Year by Year Leaders for Triples ]
