Herb Pennock Stats

Herb Pennock was born on Saturday, February 10, 1894, in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Pennock was 18 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 14, 1912, with the Philadelphia Athletics. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Herb Pennock baseball stats page.

"Herb Pennock was probably the best left-handed pitcher in the American League during the 1920s. Hailing from historic Kennett Square, Pennsylvania (the 'Mushroom Capital of the World'), Pennock had a silky smooth deliver and used a variety of pitches and speeds. Babe Ruth considered the crafty southpaw one of the all-time best pitchers, noting, 'If I had to use one word to describe Pennock, it would be class'" - Author Frank Russo in Bury My Heart at Cooperstown: Salacious, Sad, And Surreal Deaths in the History of Baseball (Triumph Books, 04/01/2006, 'Herb Pennock', Page 137)

Did you know that when Herb Pennock won twenty-one games in 1924 , he became the first New York Yankees left-handed pitcher to enter the 20-Wins Club ? Two years later, in 1926 , he won twenty-three games (first two-time 20-Wins Club lefty Bronx Bomber ), breaking his own team record for wins in a season by a lefty - one The Knight Of Kennett Square held until Lefty Gomez won twenty-six games in 1934 .

Herb Pennock Baseball Card
Herb Pennock | 1992 Conlon Baseball Card (#594) | Baseball Almanac Collection
Herb Pennock was a well respected pitcher who was very well known for his knowledge and understanding of the art of pitching. His 10 Commandments For Pitchers was researched and preserved by Baseball Almanac in our Baseball Lists / Legendary Lists section over 17 years ago and the back of the 1992 Conlon baseball card (pictured above) offers a little insight into his how he learned a few things about hitters:

Herb Pennock was born to a wealthy Pennsylvania family and was a graduate of exclusive prep schools. Babe Ruth was raised in an orphanage for the poor. Pennock was known as refined and dignified gentleman. The Babe as a boisterous carouser. But the two men had a friendship that lasted nearly 30 years. It began when they were young southpaw pitchers for the Boston Red Sox in 1916 , and continued when they were teammates on the great Yankee clubs of the 1920s and 1930s. The Babe was known to pick his friend's brain about hitting, especially when the legendary slugger was in a batting slump. Each hit a memorable home run that involved the other.

In May of 1920, while Pennock was still a member of the Red Sox , The Bambino swatted his first home run as a Yankee - the 50th of his career - off his former teammate. The following year, Pennock smashed a ball into the outfield grass in Fenway Park . When Ruth had trouble retrieving the ball, Pennock circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run, the first of his career. 'It was the only time I was photographed with a bat in my hand,' the future Hall of Fame twirler said.

Herb Pennock Hall of Fame Plaque
Herb Pennock | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1948 ( HOF )
The Squire was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1948, due in part to his postseason performance - a perfect 5-0 record, with a 1.95 ERA, 3 saves, no errors while fielding, across five World Series ( 1914 , 1923 , 1926 , 1927 , 1932 ), with two teams, in three different decades!
