"As a player, you don't really try to think about that (upset fans) too much. You want to go out and concentrate and do your job. That's just how I want to approach it. The fans have a right to boo, you know? If they boo, it's because you're not doing your job. You just try to go out and do the best you can." - Jim Thome in Sports Illustrated (March 2, 2003, Page 17)

Did you know that Jim Thome was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players Top 100 Greatest Indians and Thome was named one of the nine first basemen.

600 Home Runs Club
600 Home Runs Club Lithograph | Sports Illustrated, Inc. | September 13, 2011
Jim Thome finished his career with six-hundred twelve home runs. On August 15, 2011 , he became the eighth player ( Hank Aaron , Barry Bonds , Ken Griffey, Jr. , Willie Mays , Alex Rodriguez , Babe Ruth & Sammy Sosa ) to reach the 600 home runs plateau. Here are some additional numbers of interest as they relate to this truly prolific (future Hall of Fame) slugger:

5 - Jim Thome, Larry Doby and Rick Manning are related. How? They each played for the Cleveland Indians and they each had a golden sombrero ( Five Strikeouts in a 9-Inning Game ).

13 - Jim Thome hit his first walk-off home run on June 15, 1994 . On August 17, 2010 , he hit his twelfth walk off homer, tying Babe Ruth for the Major League mark. On June 23, 2012 , "Thomer" hit his thirteenth and final walk-off home run - the most by any hitter in baseball history.

42 - Jim Thome hit 42 home runs with the 2006 Chicago White Sox ; along with Joe Crede (30 HRs), Jermaine Dye (44 HRs) and Paul Konerko (35 HRs), the quartet were only the third team with four 30 home run hitters in American League history.

52 - Jim Thome hit 52 home runs with the 2002 Cleveland Indians , the most during a single season in franchise history, only the second Indians slugger with 50-or-more home runs during the same season. Do you know who did it first? [ Answer ]

337 - Jim Thome hit 337 home runs with the Cleveland Indians - the most in franchise history. His 1,008 walks, 1,400 strikeouts, and 87 intentional bases on balls are also still the most in team history to this date.

493 - Jim Thome played 493 games at third base, appearing exclusively on the field at that position from 1991 through 1996. Then the hot corner slugger slid over to first base in 1997, appearing in 1,106 games at the position from 1997 through 2007. In 2006, he primarily became a designated hitter appearing in 818 games as a DH - three distinct "careers" for the veteran hitter.

Jim Thome Batting Stance
Jim Thome Batting Stance | AP Wire Image | Photoshop by Baseball Almanac, Inc.
When Jim Thome steps to the plate, he slowly lifts his bat, points it towards the outfield, then settles into his stance. His signature batting stance was inspired by the fictional slugger Roy Hobbs in The Natural and was the idea of his Minor League Manager, Charlie Manuel who said (Sports Illustrated, July 13, 1998, 'The Pride Of Peoria Cleveland slugger Jim Thome is an All-Star starter and maybe--just maybe--the best player in his baseball'), "All the credit goes to Jimmy, because he works so hard and he's real coachable. One thing we came up with together. I was managing him at Charlotte in '93, on the AAA team, and we were in the clubhouse and the movie The Natural was on the TV. Robert Redford steps in, batting left, just like Jimmy. We were looking for a swing key, something that would open Jimmy up, let him hit to all fields. Redford steps in there and holds the bat with his right hand, way out in front of him, shoulder high. We both said, 'Let's try that.' Right away, it worked."
