Clyde Vollmer Stats

Clyde Vollmer was born on Saturday, September 24, 1921, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Vollmer was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 31, 1942, with the Cincinnati Reds. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Clyde Vollmer baseball stats page.

"Despite its mere 315-footage to the left field wall, clutch-clouting Clyde Vollmer is the first Boston Red Sox right-handed batter to hit three home runs in one game at Fenway park's 39-year history ( Box Score ). And that prodigious slugging feat has been performed on those premises by only three others. Ken Keltner did it for Cleveland back in 1941, Ted Williams for the Red Sox in 1946, the day Lou Boudreau was inspired to invent his still famous shift, and the Indians ' Robert Avila this season. One of the latter's four-baggers, however, was in inside the parker." - The Iowa City Press (AP Wire, 'Vollmer Fourth to Hit Three Homers at Fenway in One Tilt,' July 26, 1951)

On May 31, 1942 , Clyde Vollmer walked to the plate in the third inning, dug-in versus Max Butcher , and swung mightily at the first pitch thrown to him, connecting for a home run in his first at bat , off the first pitch thrown to him, both firsts in Cincinnati Reds history as well.

Did you know that Clyde Vollmer was the first American League player with eight plate appearances in a 9-inning game ( June 8, 1950 ), tying the Major League plate appearance record set previously by three different National League players, since tied in both leagues by several more ballplayers.
