MLB Player of the Month Award

Major League Baseball Players Who Won Player of the Month

The National League officially began recognizing a Player of the Month on June 4, 1958. Warren Giles polled baseball writers and broadcasters from each Major League city then announced the winner and awarded them with an engraved desk set.

The American League began honoring a Player of the Month Award in 1974. Neither league split the award in any fashion until the National League began honoring a Pitcher of the Month Award in 1975 followed by the American League Pitcher of the Month Award in 1979.

"We are a game of tradition. The right kind of tradition has made baseball what it is, but blindly following tradition may lead into a rutn. Baseball must keep pace with the times." - Warren Files (1969)

The first and only Major League baseball player to earn / receive a Player of the Month Award three times during the same season was Mark McGwire who, in 1998, won the honor in April, May and September.
Did you know that Al Kaline , who won in September 1974, won his first & only Player of the Month Award during the final month of his Major League career?
Award winners have included average players having breakout months, legendary players have another legendary month, and even one or two fair players having career type months. Share your memories on Baseball Fever .
