Year by Year Leaders for At Bats

An at-bat is an officially recognized statistic that counts the number of times a batter steps into the batter's box. It does not include times when a batter reaches first base by a bases on balls (walks), being hit by a pitch, any sacrifices, or catcher interference.

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a year-by-year leaderboard in Major League at-bats for every season since 1876. Note: A bold faced entry denotes that the player was active during the previous Major League season.

"It would be useless for any player to attempt to explain successful batting." - Tris Speaker

Current Through 2019 Season

Did you know that the two strike seasons (1981 & 1994) are the only Major League baseball seasons where the first place player from each league had less than five-hundred at-bats?

1920 was the first season where the leader from each league played in the same city. The city? St. Louis which had the Cardinals in the National League and the Browns in the American League.

Willie Wilson , Juan Samuel , Ichiro Suzuki and Jimmy Rollins are the only four players in Major League history to have more than seven-hundred at-bats during a single season of play.
