Tommie Agee Stats

Tommie Agee was born on Sunday, August 9, 1942, in Magnolia, Alabama. Agee was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 14, 1962, with the Cleveland Indians. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Tommie Agee baseball stats page.

"Few Mets achieved a higher state of popularity than Tommie Agee, who succumbed to a massive heart attack that day (January 22, 2001) while leaving his New York City office. Agee was only 58, which made the news all the more unbearable. Although Agee played only a handful of his 12 seasons with the Mets and didn't start or finish his career with the franchise, he became a lasting symbol of the team's unexpected success in 1969. Displaying his vintage Gold Glove defense against the Baltimore Orioles, Agee made two acrobatic catches for the Mets in Game 3 of the 1969 World Series . The pair of catches helped the Mets win the game and take a two games-to-one lead in the Series. And let's not forget what Agee did during the regular season in 1969, when he hit a career-high 26 home runs as the team's everyday center fielder." - By Bruce Markusen in Tales from the New York Mets Dugout: A Collection of the Greatest Mets Stories Ever Told (Sports Publishing, 03/14/2012, Page 234)

Did you know that when Tommie Agee finished his fifth big league season with a .273 batting average, twenty-two homers, and eighty-six RBIs, he was voted by Baseball Writers as the best Rookie of the Year , the third Chicago White Sox player to receive the honor?

Agee was the first Pale Hose outfielder to win Rookie of the Year , joining, a shortstop ( Luis Aparicio ) and a pitcher ( Gary Peters ). Agee was still able to win the prestigious baseball award because his plate appearances and time on roster still classified him as a rookie.

Baseball Moments | Agee Gets It Done | MLB Advanced Media, L.P.
The year after that legendary catch, Tommie Agee led all National League outfielders in putouts and range factor. He turned the second most double plays by a center fielder, led the NL in errors as well, but still received the highest fielding honor - the first New York Mets outfielder to win a Gold Glove Award .

Agee was the first first New York Mets player to score 100-or-more runs in the same season, finishing the 1970 campaign with a team record 107 runs scored, breaking the previous team record of 97 runs scored (set by Agee in 1969). That mark was broken first by Darryl Strawberry in 1987, and more than a dozen times since then. Do you know who holds the current Mets team record for runs scored in a season as of today?
