Javier Baez Stats

Javier Baez was born on Tuesday, December 1, 1992, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Baez was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on August 5, 2014, with the Chicago Cubs. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Javier Baez baseball stats page.

"The most powerful swing in all of minor league baseball begins each at-bat with a cold stare of indifference. And ends in a blur of violence. But when Javier Baez connects, when he syncs up his waist-high leg kick with the serpentine coil of his arms and his torso, what you marvel at is not the trajectory of the ball or the distance it travels. It's the sound that bat and ball make when they meet. It's a mixture of hunger and rage. A sledgehammer striking iron." - Senior Writer Kevin Van Valkenburg on ESPN (August 26, 2015. After loss and injury, is Javier Baez finally ready for the Cubs? . Source )

Ednel Javier Báez is an active Major League Baseball player for the Chicago Cubs (2014-today). El Mago, his nickname, is a very versatile infielder with a great glove who helped lead the Cubbies to the World Series in 2016 , winning the League Championship Most Valuable Player Award along the way, the first Cub to ever receive the honor !

During that League Championship Series , Javier Baez stole home in the second inning of Game 1 , the nineteenth player in baseball history to steal home in a postseason game, but the first Cub to do it since 1907! Do you know who it was? [ Answer ]

Javier Baez is an excellent defender , a smooth fielding infielder who is comfortable around-the-horn, but he has never won a Gold Glove Award, and probably won't due to him being used at a variety of positions each season. However, the Fielding Bible Award does recognize a Multi-Position winner, an honor Baez has received three years in a row (2016-2018). The press release said:

When slick fielding shortstop Addison Russell went out with injury, then later a suspension, Javy Baez stepped over from his second base position without missing a beat for the Cubs . His defense is elite at both second base and shortstop. He also moves to third base and first base, whenever needed, with tremendous success. He saved five runs at second base, three at shortstop and two more at third base in 2018. He led all infielders (not counting first baseman) with 46 Good Fielding Plays in 2018. He is excellent turning double plays from both second base and shortstop. His ability to make tags on throws is legendary.

Javier Baez was named the starting second baseman for the 2018 All-Star Game , his first All-Star selection. He was the second player in baseball history, behind Willie Mays , to have at least eighteen home runs, eighteen doubles, eighteen stolen bases, and five triples by the Midsummer Classic break!

On July 25, 2017 , Javier Baez tied the National League record for strikeouts in a 9-inning game (5) - a mark that had been tied previously by two additional Cubs , Geovany Soto and Ted Lilly . When Baez struck out five times again, on May 28, 2019, he not only became the first Cub to do it twice, he was the first National League player to ever do it twice ! TRIVIA: What American League player proceeded him? [ Answer ]
