Dick Fowler Stats

Dick Fowler was born on Wednesday, March 30, 1921, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Fowler was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 13, 1941, with the Philadelphia Athletics. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Dick Fowler baseball stats page.

"Dick Fowler, first American leaguer in more than five years to pitch a no-hit , no-run game, says he's 'A pretty lucky guy.' The 23-year-old Athletics hurler, just 24 days out of the Canadian army, crashed baseball's elite yesterday ( Box Score ) when he blanked the St. Louis Browns 1-0 in the windup of a doubleheader here. He struck out six. Only five Brownies reached base - four on walks and the fifth on a fielder's choice. Fowler said he knew he was close to every pitcher's dream as early as the sixth inning. His most anxious moments came in the first half of the ninth with the score still tied 0-0. Milton Byrnes walked and Lou Finney slammed the ball to deep right field. It was foul. In the A's half, Hal Peck tripled and Irv Hall singled him home with the winning run. 'It was a wonderful feeling when we got that one run,' said Fowler. 'What do you think?' he was asked. 'You don't think - you just sort of get a thrill all over.' Fowler said he was feeding the Brownies 'anything they couldn't hit.'" - The Fitchburg Sentinel (AP Wire, 09/10/1945, "Pretty Lucky Guy" - Fowler, After No-Hitter , Page 7)

Richard John Fowler was a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics (from 1941 to 1942, 1945 to 1952). Fowler, who was commonly called Dick, missed the 1943 and 1944 seasons because he served in the Canadian Army during World War II.

Did you know that when Dick Fowler returned from the War, he threw a no-hitter , on September 9, 1945 , against the St. Louis Browns at Shibe Park? Too easy? Did you know it was his first start in three years, his first career shutout, and when the no-hitter was official, he became the first Canadian -born pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter ?
