Did you know that when Ron Hunt was hit by 50 pitches in 1971, he was credited with the Major League record , passing Hughie Jennings who had been credited with 49 HBP in 1896? However, modern researchers found two additional instances in box scores and Jennings total was adjusted giving him the National League record , but through today, Hunt & Jennings are the only two players in baseball history with 50+ HBP in a single season .

Ron Hunt Hit By Pitch Record

Ron Hunt led the National League in hit by pitches in seven consecutive seasons - 1968 [25 HBP], 1969 [25 HBP], 1970 [26 HBP], 1971 [50 HBP], 1972 [26 HBP], 1973 [24 HBP], 1974 [16 HBP] - setting the Major League record for most seasons leading the league in hit by pitch and most consecutive seasons leading the league in hit by pitch .

Ron Hunt scored five runs in a game on June 8, 1973 , the first time any player from the Montreal Expos scored that many times in a game. The team record for runs scored in a game was tied by Larry Parrish ( May 29, 1977 ), Dave Cash ( May 27, 1978 ), Tim Raines ( August 13, 1987 ) and Rondell White ( June 11, 1995 ), but never broken.

When Ron Hunt took the field on April 16, 1963 , he didn't get hit by a pitch, but he was wearing #33 for the 1963 New York Mets , and he became the first player in franchise history to wear #33 . Though he only spent four years wearing it, ESPN ranked him as the 47th Greatest Mets ( Source ) player saying, "A feisty second baseman, Hunt had no fear of a fight and no fear at the plate, eventually becoming the master of getting hit by a pitch. He was the runner-up to Pete Rose for NL Rookie of the Year in 1963, and the Mets' first All-Star starter in 1964 ."
