Ron Kittle Stats

Ron Kittle was born on Sunday, January 5, 1958, in Gary, Indiana. Kittle was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 2, 1982, with the Chicago White Sox. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Ron Kittle baseball stats page.

"It was hard to give up on Ron Kittle - because he never gave up on himself. The right-handed power hitter won the Rookie of the Year Award with the White Sox in 1983. Five years earlier he had been released by the Dodgers after having part of his spine fused, one of several injuries that limited Kittle to only two full seasons in a 10-year major league career." - Baseball: The Biographical Encyclopedia (Matthew Silverman, Total Sports, May 2000, Page 611)

Did you know that Ron Kittle hit thirty-five home runs his first full season, breaking the Chicago White Sox record for home runs in a season by a rookie set by Zeke Bonura (27 home runs), forty-nine years earlier (in 1934)? Kittle's record stood the test of time as well, staying in place for thirty-one years, until it was broken in 2014, by Jose Abreu , who hit thirty-six.

Ron Kittle and Jose Abreu each won the Rookie of the Year Award with the Chicago White Sox , due in part to those home runs, as well as both of them finishing with a 100-RBI season. In team history (since 1901, their first season), only two additional rookies ever had a 100-RBI, Smead Jolley (114 RBI in 1959 1930 ) and Zeke Bonura (110 RBI in 1959 1934 ).

Ron Kittle, 1983 Rookie of the Year
Ron Kittle | Rookie of the Year "Polaroid" by Ron Kittle | ( RonKittle.com )
Ron Kittle hit a home run every 14.9 at-bats in 1983, the best ratio in the entire American League that season (#2. Greg Luzinski 15.7, #3. Tony Armas 19.5, #4. Jim Rice 16.1 & #5. Eddie Murray 17.6). A year later, he did it again, connecting every 14.6 at-bats (#2. Tony Armas 14.9, #3 Dave Kingman 15.7, #4 Dwayne Murphy 16.9, #5. Lance Parrish 17.5). No White Sox player had ever lead in two consecutive seasons and only Dick Allen had ever even led twice (1972 & 1974).

The grand slam column in the Ron Kittle Hitting Stats section is correct, Ron Kittle hit 176 home runs in ten years, averaged 17.6 home runs a year, finished with four 20-home run seasons, two 30-home run seasons, and zero grand slams. Exactly one Major league player has hit more home runs (190) than Kittle (176), and still finished without a slam ( click here ).
