Clem Labine | Sports Illustrated (June 3, 1957) Baseball Almanac Collection
On September 2, 1957 , Clem Labine stepped onto the mound in the fifth inning in relief of Danny McDevitt in Ebbets Field and became the last Brooklyn Dodger to ever wear uniform #41 . On April 17, 1958 , Clem Labine stepped onto the mound in the eighth inning in relief of Don Bessent in Seals Stadium and became the first Los Angeles Dodger to ever wear uniform #41 .

On July 9, 1957 , Clem Labine stepped onto the mound in relief of Larry Jackson in Sportsman's Park in the 1957 All-Star Game and became the last Brooklyn Dodger pitcher to play in an All-Star Game .

Stan Musial said, "Clem Labine was one of the best relief pitchers for several years because he had a wicked curve and a terrific sinker." How wicked? Wayne Terwilliger said, "Clem Labine had the best curveball I ever saw." According to Hall of Fame umpire Jocko Conlan , "the sinker broke down to right-handed batter, maybe even in a little, the curve broke down and away." Labine used them both to save ninety-six games and had, for a brief period, the unofficial (saves became an official statistics in 1969) National League record for most games saved in the NL - passing the 60-career saves recorded by in the senior circuit by Al Brazle .
