"I can handle it. You get yourself into the kind of situation I did (committing an armed robbery when he was 17) and you've got to answer some tough questions. Everybody asks about the prison thing, but next year maybe they won't." - Ron LeFlore in Baseball Digest (June 1975, Phil Elderkin)

Ron LeFlore, One in a Million Movie
Ron LeFlore | One in a Million ( IMDB ) | September 26, 1978 | Gimbel Productions
On September 26, 1978, CBS aired a movie called One in a Million: The Ron LeFlore Story . The story was originally an autobiography, written by Ron LeFlore himself, called Breakout: From Prison to the Big Leagues , and told about his journey from a prison in Michigan - where he was an inmate - to the Major Leagues - where he became an All-Star in 1978 .

One in a Million: The Real Life Story of a Dream Come True

Life in the Detroit ghetto is not an easy one for Ron LeFlore. The appeal of "the streets" is fast action, easy money... and trouble. One night Ron leads two friends in an armed robbery, is caught and sentenced to 5 to 15 years in the State Prison. On his way to jail, Ron warns his brother Gerald to steer clear of the "the streets."

In prison, Ron is constantly in trouble until he receives word that Gerald has become involved with drugs. Ron changes his attitude, joins the prison baseball team and works towards getting an early parole so he can help his brother. He soon becomes the star player and Billy Martin , manager of the Detroit Tigers , visits the prison and promises Ron a tryout. Ron gets an early parole and makes the Tigers minor league team. When a lucky break sends him to the major leagues, Ron's play is brilliant and he is selected to the All-Star team.

Ron has overcome his criminal past, survived the taunts of the crowds and must now try to save his brother... from the swift and destructive powers of the ghetto.
