Did you know that Mike Schmidt won three Most Valuable Player Awards (1980, 1981, 1986) and finished in the top ten five additional times - the most by any Phillies player in franchise history? Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate one of the greatest third baseman in Major League history:

4 - Mike Schmidt hit four home runs in one game on April 17, 1976 , the first (and to date only) third baseman with 4 home runs in 1 game .

6 - Mike Schmidt won six Silver Slugger Awards , including five consecutive (1980 through 1984, then one more in 1986), and only one player in history has more at third base, Wade Boggs (8) - not one other third baseman in history has won more than four.

10 - Mike Schmidt won ten Gold Glove Awards , including nine consecutive (1976 through 1984, then one more in 1986), and only one player in history has more at third base, Brooks Robinson (16) - not one other third baseman in history has won more than eight.

12 - Mike Schmidt was named to twelve All-Star Games (1974, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989).

20 - Mike Schmidt came up to the show in 1972 wearing #22 , Roger Freed was wearing #20 (1971 and 1972), but starting in 1973 Schmidt wore #22 , never stopped wearing it the rest of his eighteen year career, and after he retired the Phillies retired it.

28 - Mike Schmidt was ranked twenty-eighth by The Sporting News when they released their list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players in the history of baseball.

30 - Mike Schmidt was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the 1971 Major League Baseball Draft with the 30th overall pick - click the 1971 dDraft to see the 29 players taken before Schmitty.

509 - Mike Schmidt left the field with 548 career home runs (see #548 below), but "only" 509 of those homers were hit while he was playing third base - the Major League Record for Home Runs by a Third Baseman (hit while playing third). The remaining home runs were hit while Schmitty was playing first (36), pinch hitting (2) and shortstop (1).

548 - Mike Schmidt hit 548 home runs, joining the 500 Home Runs Club on April 18, 1987 , and holds the Major League record for most home runs ever hit by a player who spent his entire career with just one team ( Philadelphia Phillies ).

2,404 - Mike Schmidt played in 2,404 games, all of them with the Philadelphia Phillies , the all-time team leader in games played in a Phillies uniform. He is also the Phillies franchise leader in at-bats, extra base hits, outs made, plate appearances, RBI, runs created, runs scored, sacrifice flies, strikeouts, times on base, total bases and walks.

Mike Schmidt had a nagging rotator cuff injury that plagued him during the later part of his career. In 1989, Schmitty retired suddenly (after 42 games he was hitting .203 with 1 home run), playing in his final game on May 28, 1989 , then announcing his retirement the following day (no farewell tour occurred). Later that same year, Mike was named to the 1989 All-Star Game becoming the first retired player in Major League history voted into an All-Star Game.
