Chase Utley Stats

Chase Utley was born on Sunday, December 17, 1978, in Pasadena, California. Utley was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 4, 2003, with the Philadelphia Phillies. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Chase Utley baseball stats page.

"If some Phillies do lack big league industriousness... Utley is beyond reproach, conspicuous in his effort. The 27-year-old second baseman dives for all grounders in his zip code. He grinds out at bats and bursts out of the box as if someone had fired a starter's pistol, even when he's not trying to extend a hitting streak. Yankees third base coach and former Phillies manager Larry Bowa says, ' He plays every game like it's the seventh game of the World Series. '" - Sportswriter Michael Farber in Sports Illustrated (Grime Pays, 08/14/2006, Page 44)

On September 28, 2003 , the final baseball game in ballpark history was played at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (30+ years of baseball history). In the bottom of the last inning ever, Chase Utley (playing in his first season) recorded the final at-bat:
Veterans Stadium Postcard
Veterans Stadium | Art Color Card Distributors, Inc. | T-21 Postcard, March 1972

September 28, 2003 . Final Game at Veterans Stadium. 9th Inning Play by Play.

Atlanta Braves: Jason Marquis (RP) replaced Gary Sheffield (RF) in lineup. Darren Bragg moved from LF to RF. Mike Hessman (LF) replaced Roberto Hernandez (RP) in lineup.

Philadelphia Phillies: Mike Lieberthal grounded out (to pitcher, first out). Pat Burrell singled to center field. Chase Utley grounded into a double play ( Jesse Garcia to Marcus Giles to Robert Fick ) [Utley out at first, second out / Burrell out at second, third out].

Did you know that Chase Utley hit a grand slam for his first Major League hit? During his debut, April 4, 2003 , Utley pinch hit for Joe Roa , striking out in his first at-bat. Twenty days later, on April 24, 2003 , Utley was chosen to start at second base, and flied out during the second inning, his second at bat. Then, in the bottom of the third inning, bases loaded with Phillies ( Jim Thome , Mike Lieberthal , David Bell ), Utley had his first hit - a grand slam.

Did you know that Chase Utley, in 2004, was the first second baseman to win the Mike Schmidt Most Valuable Player Award ? The Philadelphia chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America vote annually for the Philadelphia Phillies Most Valuable Player Award receipient, also called the Mike Schmidt Most Valuable Player Award , and in 2004 they honored Utley and left fielder Pat Burrell .

Did you know that Chase Utley won four consecutive Silver Slugger Award at second base, from 2006 through 2009, and only one National League second-bagger has ever won more (7) Silver Slugger Award , Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg ?

Did you know that Chase Utley holds the Philadelphia Phillies record for hit by pitch in season? In 1992, Dave Hollins became the first Phillie struck by 19 pitches in a season, breaking a mark set over 100 years earlier. In 2007, Utley cruised (or should we say bruised) past Hollins , reaching base 25 times due to hit by pitch, then one year later, Chase broke his own record when he was drilled a still-standing team record 27 times.

During the 2009 World Series , Game 1 , Chase Utley walked during his first at-bat and set a new postseason record for consecutive games reaching base safely during postseason play (26). In his next two at bats, Utley went deep off lefty starting pitcher CC Sabathia , a lefty-versus-lefty match-up which Chase ultimately "won". The last time a left-handed hitter went deep twice in a World Series game versus a left-handed pitcher occurred during Game 4 of the 1928 World Series , Babe Ruth versus Bill Sherdel (respectively).
