Dixie Walker Stats

Dixie Walker was born on Saturday, September 24, 1910, in Villa Rica, Georgia. Walker was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 28, 1931, with the New York Yankees. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Dixie Walker baseball stats page.

"Over the course of more than half a century, Fred 'Dixie' Walker lived several baseball lives. He went from sure-fire prospect and successor to Babe Ruth , to a player written off for never having reached his potential, to stardom as one of the greatest heroes in Dodger history, to persona non grata because of his relationship with Jackie Robinson , and finally to redemption as a well-respected minor league manager and major league batting coach. During his playing days, he won a batting championship and played in two World Series and four All-Star games. Yet to this day, he is remembered to often only for the charge that he was the player most responsible for trying to keep Robinson from joining the Brooklyn Dodger . He deserves better." - Author Lyle Spatz in Dixie Walker: A Life in Baseball (Mcfarland Publishing, 05/01/2011, Page 1)

Did you know that Dixie Walker is the son of Dixie Walker (1909-2012), the brother of Harry Walker (1940-1955), and the nephew of Ernie Walker (1913-1915)? Too easy? Did you know that Dixie was the only player to be a teammate of both Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson ?

In 1944 , Dixie Walker finished the season with a major league leading .363 batting average , tops in the National League ( Top 25 ), and well ahead of the American League batting champion , Lou Boudreau (.327 / Top 25 ). Dixie was the fifth Brooklyn Dodger to win a batting championship , joining Pete Reiser (.343 in 1941), Lefty O'Doul (.368 in 1932), Zack Wheat (.335 in 1918), Jake Daubert (.329 in 1914 & .350 in 1913) and Dan Brouthers (.335 in 1892).

In 1947 , Dixie Walker finished the season with a .306 batting average, ninth best in the National League ( Top 25 ), and well behind the batting champion , Harry Walker (.363). To date, Dixie and Harry Walker remain the only pair of brothers in Major League history to win batting titles .

Germany Schaefer scored five runs in a game on July 17, 1907, a Detroit Tigers record for runs scored in a game. Lu Blue ( August 22, 1922 ) and Ty Cobb ( July 30, 1917 & September 21, 1923 ) were the next two Tigers to score five times in a game. On April 30, 1939 , Dixie Walker tied the record and to date, no Tiger has yet to score more than five times in a game (though it has been tied several times since Dixie).
