League Championship Series History

Every LCS in Major League Baseball History

The League Championships Series, love it or hate it, is here to stay. Hardcore fans from yesteryear long for the day when the leader of the American League faced off against the leader of the National League when the regular season was over.

Since 1969, the League Championship Series has decided which two teams from their respective League will face-off against each other in the World Series. Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a comprehensive look at the American League Championship Series (ALCS) and National League Championship Series (NLCS).

NOTES: Team names in bold print won and moved on to the Fall Classic. Team names with an asterisk next to their name denotes wild-card teams.

Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The first Championship Series was in 1969, the year baseball added four new franchises: the San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos, Kansas City Royals, and Seattle Pilots (who moved to Milwaukee the following year and became the Brewers) giving both leagues twelve teams each. Prior to that year, the regular season champs from each league went straight to the World Series. So when cellar-dwellers like the New York Mets and the Houston Astros got stuck in ninth or tenth place early in the season, their pennant hopes were crushed by the middle of May." - Columnist Sean Gregory on Time.com (A Brief History of The League Championship Series, 10/09/2008)
