2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game

The 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was the 84th midseason exhibition between the all-stars of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). The game was played on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Citi Field, the home of the National League New York Mets.

More than a few great Mets pitchers have taken the mound in Queens, including Dwight Gooden, Pedro Martinez, Nolan Ryan and 2013 All-Star Game first-pitch honoree Tom Seaver. However, this Midsummer Classic was dominated by American League hurlers who held the National League to three hits in a 3-0 shutout.

At Yankee Stadium, hearing "Enter Sandman" is routine; hearing it on the road in a National League park is unheard of. But in the eighth inning when future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera entered the game, he received a memorable standing ovation - not only from the 45,000+ fans but from players in both the American and National League dugouts. It was a moment that will be indelibly etched in All-Star history books.

As in every pitchers' duel, some runners eventually crossed the plate. Miguel Cabrera opened the fourth inning with a double, then scored the first run of the game when D-Backs hurler Patrick Corbin gave up a sac-fly to Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista. An inning later, Orioles outfielder Adam Jones doubled, Twins catcher Joe Mauer singled and Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice. The American League hitters tacked on a final insurance run in the eighth when Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis' RBI double capped a three-hit attack against Braves closer Craig Kimbrel.

Rangers closer Joe Nathan, who pitched a scoreless ninth for the junior circuit save, said, "We got blanked last year, so to be able to come back and do it to them means a lot." The Yankees' Mariano Rivera became the first reliever to ever receive the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award. Rivera is only the second Yankee (Derek Jeter) to win the award, and the first pitcher since Pedro Martinez was awarded the honor in the 1999 Midsummer Classic.

Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"New York deserves its fair share of All-Star games. I think with Citi being new and the new amenities and just how glowingly everybody else talks about the ballpark, they deserve it. Hopefully I can play at a level to make the All-Star team there." - David Wright in The New York Post (Kevin Kernan, 07/15/2009, 'Source: All-Star Game at Citi Field in 2013', Source )

Did you know that the designated hitter became a permanent position during the 2010 Midsummer Classic and all future All-Star Games - regardless of the site (National League park / American League park) where its played?

This will be the second All-Star Game ever played at the New York Mets home field, the first one was the 1964 All-Star Game in Shea Stadium.

With the American League losing the 2012 All-Star Game 8-0 and winning this year's game 3-0, this marked the first time in All-Star Game history that there were consecutive shutouts in the Midsummer Classic .
