Silver Slugger Award

Major League Baseball Players Who Won a Silver Slugger Award

A silver bat? A silver sugger? A Silver Slugger Award ? Few players will ever become members of the Triple Crown Club, but they might hit better than any other player in their respective league at their respective position.

At the completion of the 1980 season Hillerich & Bradsby, the maker of Louisville Slugger bats, devised an award - The Silver Slugger Award - to honor the best offensive player at each position. Major League managers and coaches use the three fields of the Triple Crown - batting average, home runs and runs batted in - and a combination of total bases when voting for each years recipients.

Each winner of a Silver Slugger Award receives a full size Louisville Slugger bat engraved with the year, batting totals, their name, their position and of course — it's silver in color.

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a comprehensive breakdown of ever Major League Baseball player who has won a Silver Slugger Award.

"You are challenged by the game of baseball to do your very best day in and day out." - Silver Slugger Recipient (eight times over) Cal Ripken, Jr.

The Silver Slugger Award | Research by Baseball Almanac, Inc. | Baseball Awards Menu

Did you know that every American League recipient of a Silver Slugger Award, in 1996 , had a batting average of .300 or better?

Did you know that Don Robinson won the Silver Slugger Award in 1989 , and hit less than .200 (.185)? Did you know he did it again the following season (.143 in 1990 )?

Did you know that J.D. Martinez won two Silver Sluggers in 2018, taking home an outfielder and designated hitter award -- the first to ever win a Silver Slugger at two positions during the same season ?

The Hank Aaron Award is quite similar to the Silver Slugger Award and goes to the player in each league who leads in hits, home runs and runs batted in.
