Fielding Bible Award

Every Major League Baseball Player who won a Fielding Bible Award

The Fielding Bible Award recognize the best defensive player for each fielding position in Major League Baseball based on statistical analysis. John Dewan and Baseball Info Solutions conduct the annual selection process, which commenced in 2006.

Fielding Bible Awards are voted on annually by ten fielding experts including Dewan, sabermetric pioneer Bill James, and writers such as Peter Gammons, Sports Illustrated's Joe Posnanski, SB Nation editor Rob Neyer, and ESPN analyst Doug Glanville.

The Fielding Bible Awards have historically been announced before the Gold Glove Awards, the traditional measurement of fielding excellence. Dewan wrote that this award cannot equal the prestige of the Gold Glove, which started 50+ years earlier, but it provides an alternative.

Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"These awards (the Fielding Bible Awards) are far more accurate than the Gold Gloves in that statistics are employed along with the opinions of a large panel of experts. The Gold Gloves are selected by managers and coaches and obviously in some cases may have seen a player only six times all season." - Columnist Peter Abraham in The Boston Globe (11/01/2010, 'So much for run prevention', Source )

Did you know that Albert Pujols won a record setting five Fielding Bible Awards? In 2013, Pujols was passed by six-time recipient Yadier Molina , who has not yet been passed, but in 2018, Andrelton Simmons tied Yadi !

Did you know that Franklin Gutierrez won a Fielding Bible Award at more than one position (2008 in right field with the Cleveland Indians then 2009 in center field with the Seattle Mariners )?

Did you know that in 2014, they began to recognize a Multi-Position Fielding Bible Award, for those utility players who were so skilled and versatile at mulitple positions, they needed a category just for them? The winners have been Lorenzo Cain (2014), Ender Inciarte (2015) and Javier Baez (2016, 2017, 2018)!

If you are interested in fielding statistics / research and these three books aren't on your bookshelf, you don't know what you're missing, truly:

Do you agree with the choices made by experts? Did you know that each voter selects the best defensive player at each position with the best player given ten points, the second best nine points and so forth? Those totals from each expert are then made into a total score which determines the winner at each fielding position - is this system better? Do you prefer the outfielder position to be specific (left - center - right) or generic? Share your answers & opinions on Baseball Fever .
