Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a comprehensive chart of every Allegheny College alumni who played baseball at the Allegheny College AND made it to the Major League level.
"He ( Glenn Beckert ) received his nickname, Bruno (after the wrestler Bruno Sammartino), from teammate Paul Popovich in the minor leagues, because Beckert frequently knocked down other infielders in pursuit of pop-ups." - Writer Steve Holtje on BaseballLibrary.com
The Allegheny College baseball program started in 1867 and Russ McKelvy was their first player to make it to the Major League level. On September 3, 1934, former All-American (1931) football star Bob Garbark broke into the major leagues, but is not included on the chart above as he did not play baseball for the Gators.
On June 1, 1878, Russ McKelvy became the first Gator to hit a major league home run when he connected off Bobby Mitchell in the top of the third inning, with a runner on second, and scored an inside the park (Avenue Grounds) home run.
