Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame

Every Hall of Fame Member in the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame

The official Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame ( Salón de la Fama del Beisbol Cubano ) opened in 1939. It was located in Havana, Cuba and existed from 1939 through 1961, closing its doors due to goverment sanctions.

In Florida, after elections to the official Hall of Fame were suspended in 1961, the Federation of Cuban Professional Players in Exile (Federacion de Peloteros Profesionales Cubanos en el Exilio) opened its doors in Miami, and continued selecting players from 1962 through 1986.

In 1986, they too closed their doors for political reasons, then resumed again in 1996, this time calling themselves the Cuban Sports Hall of Fame, but closed after a single year due to a lack of financial resources.

On December 28, 2014, the Cuban government reopened the official Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame and honored ten new inductees prior to the All-Star Game. Note: The country of Cuba DOES NOT recognize those members selected in the United States.

"There's a ballplayer (Ted Abernathy) who does two things at the same time, he pitches and he digs for oil." - Cookie Rojas

Did you know that political tension between Cuba and the United States of American caused the last eleven year delay between inductions? The "phases" seen above include the transferring of the Hall of Fame from Cuba to the United States, then in the United States the various changes in the induction committee.
In 1951, Martin Dihigo was inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1977, the National Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him as well, making Dihigo the first player to appear in both official halls of fame.
There were nearly 5,000 people - including Baseball Almanac - in attendance at a Miami hotel in 1997, for the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
