Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"At one point I was 19-10 with about two weeks to go in the season. We were in a situation where he had a hold on third place but could not reach second place. They said as soon as I won my 20th game I was through for the season. Well, I got beat 2-1, 2-0, 3-1 and 3-2 and was 19-14. My manager Bucky Harris , told me to get my rest on Saturday night before the last game of the season. He told me that if we got the lead on Sunday they could put me in. Ned Garver started against Bob Feller in Cleveland. Garver went four innings and we had a 5-1 lead. Bucky took Garver out and I pitched the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Garver couldn't get the win because he didn't pitch five innings. When I left we were leading 8-2. Paul Foytack came in and pitched the ninth and they gave me the win. You might say it was a cheap way to win a game, but I couldn't have won the last four that I had lost." - Billy Hoeft in Baseball Players of the 1950s: A Biographical Dictionary of All 1,560 Major Leaguers (Rich Marazzi , McFarland Publications, 11/30/2009, Page 158)
