Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I love the early innings of a game. I think fans would be surprised about what he talk about in the bullpen. A lot of it is about baseball. A lot of it is about life. But isn't baseball about life?" - Darrel Akerfelds in The San Diego Union-Tribune (Bill Center, Akerfelds won't soon be forgotten by Padres , June 26, 2012)

Darrel Wayne Akerfelds was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Oakland Athletics (1986), Cleveland Indians (1987), Texas Rangers (1989), and Philadelphia Phillies (1994). Darrel Akerfelds was drafted out of Columbine by the Atlanta Braves in the 9th Round of the 1980 Baseball Draft , but chose not to sign, and went to the University of Arkansas where he played baseball and football! He was a member of the bronze medal-winning Team USA at the 1982 Amateur World Series and focused on baseball in Mesa State College the year after that. The Seattle Mariners selected him in the 1st Round of the 1983 Baseball Draft , with the seventh overall pick - Darrel signed and started playing in the minors with the Bellingham Mariners later that same year.
