Why did Bronson Arroyo make the following statement in a post-game press conference on June 12, 2000 ? "Usually, if I don't wear my spikes on the bench, then I don't wear my contact lenses. Fortunately I had my contact lenses or I would have been half-blind in my major league debut." The answer is below, but it doesn't mention the following trivia item - during that debut, Bronson became the first Pittsburgh Pirate to ever take the field wearing #69 .

It had taken Arroyo five years to make it to The Show , but on June 12, 2000 , the Pirates finally called him up prior to their game against the Braves . But he was a starter, and his turn in the rotation wasn't coming for a few days, so he figured he'd have the day off -- so much so that he didn't even wear his spikes to the field. Alas, if the Baseball Gods have taught us anything, it's that they'll always find you, and they've got a fantastic sense of humor.

With the Pirates up 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Pittsburgh reached the pitcher's spot in the order. Not wanting to burn any of the bats on the bench, manager Gene Lamont called on Arroyo and his tennis shoes to pinch-hit. He faced Bruce Chen , and to his eternal credit, somehow managed to work the count full before grounding one back to the mound.

Source of Excerpt: Chris Landers. 'Newest National Bronson Arroyo made his Major League debut as a pinch-hitter -- in sneakers." Full Story .

Bronson Arroyo did not commit a single error in four different full seasons (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012), finishing the year with a perfect fielding percentage (1.000). Dozens of Cincinnati Reds starting pitchers duplicated that errorless fielding feat in a single season, two others have had four errorless seasons in Cincinnati ( Gary Nolan and Red Lucas ), but through today, Bronson remains the only Reds pitcher to ever win a Gold Glove Award !

Did you know that Bronson Arroyo tied the Boston Red Sox record for most hit batsmen in a season (20) in 2004 ? Did you know the mark Arroyo tied was set in 1923 , by Howard Ehmke ? Through today, the duo remain the only two Boston Red Sox pitchers who have plunked twenty batters in the same season.
