Did you know that Tyler Austin was the fourth New York Yankees player to hit a home run in his first at-bat ? Too easy? Did you know that the very next batter, Aaron Judge , was also making his Major League debut and when he also homered in his first at-bat , they became the first pair of players to hit back-to-back homers in their first big league at-bats in baseball history?

Before making baseball history with the Bronx Bombers , Tyler Austin was a 17-year old kid at Heritage High School (Conyers, GA), battling testicular cancer (a fast-growing teratoma tumor), learning lessons from 7-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong! The Daily News wrote:

Yankees prospect Tyler Austin beats testicular cancer, becomes one of Bombers most highly-rated prospects and could reach Majors by 2014

While Tyler fought his illness, baseball scouts were still visiting the family’s home in Conyers, Ga., about 25 miles east of Atlanta. The family made medical information packets, complete with test results, so each team that dropped by knew how Tyler was doing.

We were going to be honest,” Kim says.

Tyler had successful surgery to remove the tumor and his prognosis was helped by the fact that he complained quickly after feeling pain and his cancer was discovered early. It hadn’t spread. His doctors sent biopsies and test results to Armstrong’s doctors to see if they thought Tyler needed chemotherapy, too. He did not.

A week after the surgery, and only a few days after having his stitches removed, Tyler was in San Diego, playing in a major high school showcase game. When his face was shown on the big scoreboard screen at Petco Park, his parents could tell he was in pain, but he played anyway.

No wonder Kim says the best word to describe her son is “tenacious.
