Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"These strikeout pitchers are chumps in my book. Me, I try to make them hit that first ball. After all, those other guys out there are supposed to work too. If everybody in business was like me there wouldn't be so many people out of jobs. My idea is to throw as few pitches as possible. Even when you strike out a batter it generally takes four to seven, and sometimes even more pitches. I'd rather get that batter out on one pitch and save my arm. I am a control, and if you don't mind my saying it, smart pitcher." - Red Barrett in The Los Angeles Times (Bob Ray, 11/09/1938, 'Bob The Sports X-Ray', Sports / Page 3)

Did you know that Red Barrett holds the Major League record for fewest pitches thrown in a complete game? On August 10, 1944, ( standard box score / enhanced box score ), Barrett beat the Reds 2-0, allowed only two hits, and threw a total of 58 pitches - the fewest discovered in any game ever, by any pitcher, and the entire contest lasted 1 hour 15 minutes, the shortest night game in Major League history .

Red Barrett, the season after his unique 58-pitch game, had his first and only 20-win season (23-12) and led the National League in wins (23), innings pitched (284.2), batters faced (1,175), defensive putouts (24), and complete games (24). No Cy Young Award existed in 1945 , but at the start of the 1946 season, on the April 1st issue, Red Barrett appeared on the cover of Life Magazine (image below):
Life Magazine, April 1, 1946, Red Barrett

On September 2, 1945 , Red Barrett came within one batter of a perfect game / no hitter : In the third inning, Lennie Merullo made the only hit, and was the only baserunner of the day. After getting on base, Merullo was actually caught stealing, the Braves won 4-0, and Barrett joined the 20-wins club in style. On June 8, 1946 , Barrett came within one batter of a perfect game / no hitter yet again! Barrett retired twenty-two batters in a row before Del Ennis - who was celebrating his birthday that day - singled in the eighth inning off Red, and was the only baserunner that particular day.
