Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"When big Alton Benton was struggling along with the Athletics several years ago no one suspected that he would some day pitch half an All-Star Game. But when Joe McCarthy of the Yankees chose to stifle the National League All-Stars the other twight at the Polo Grounds, he picked his own Spud Chandler and finished with Al Benton. It was a fine compliment for the large and right-handed Oklahoma farm boy. Birdie Tebbets, the highly intelligent Detroit catcher, calls Benton the best pitcher in the American League." - Sporstwriter Harry Grayson in The Dunkirk Evening Observer (07/16/1942, 'Big Al Benton Takes Place Among Stars as Late Arrival', Page Fifteen)

On August 6, 1941 , the Detroit Tigers had a big inning, sending seventeen men to the plate in the third inning against the Cleveland Indians. Except for Rudy York , every Tiger came to the plate twice in the inning, the American League record for runs scored in the third (11) was tied, but has since been broken - eight years later on September 11, 1949 . Al Benton recorded two sacrifice bunts in that historic inning, the first known instance of any hitter collecting two sac-bunts in the same frame.

In 1926, Hooks Dauss had nine saves, a Detroit Tigers team record for saves in a season. Chief Hogsett tied Dauss ' record in 1933, but it was crushed by Al Benton in 1940, who led all the major leagues in saves with seventeen [ Year by Year Leaders for Saves ]—a franchise record that stood for twenty-six years until it was broken by Larry Sherry in 1966, who finished with twenty.
