Craig Biggio Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that Craig Biggio, Barry Bonds and Rickey Henderson are the only three players in Major League history with 2,500+ hits, 500+ doubles, 400+ stolen bases and 250+ home runs? Let's take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate to Craig Biggio, easily one of the best second baseman in baseball history:
0 - Craig Biggio tied Augie Galan of the 1935 Chicago Cubs and Dick McAuliffe of the 1968 Detroit Tigers when he played in 150+ games during the 1997 season and did not ground into a single double play .
3 - Craig Biggio appeared on his first Hall of Fame ballot in 2013, receiving 388 votes, or 68.2%, shy of the 75% needed for induction. In 2014, Biggio received 422 of the 571 votes, exactly two votes shy of what he needed to get into Cooperstown. The third time, a charm, Biggio received 82.7% of the votes needed to be immortalized in Cooperstown.
7 - Craig Biggio was a seven-time All-Star ( 1991 , 1992 , 1994 , 1995 , 1996 , 1997 , 1998 ) who also wore uniform #7 , and will be the last Houston Astro player to ever wear it. On May 23, 2008, during a pre-game ceremony in which Biggio received an award for MLB.com's This Year in Baseball 2007 Moment of the Year award for his 3,000th hit on June 28 , the Astros announced that they would retire Craig Biggio's #7 . The Houston Astros retired it on August 17, 2008 , prior to the start of a game versus the Arizona Diamondbacks.
27 - Craig Biggio went 5-for-6 on June 28, 2007 , and his third hit of that day was a single which made him the 27th player in the history of Major League Baseball to join the 3,000 Hits Club . The game was temporarily stopped while Biggio shared the moment with his wife, his children and longtime friend and former teammate Jeff Bagwell . Biggio was the first player in Houston Astros history to accumulate 3,000+ hits ( Top 1,000 ).
50 - Craig Biggio stole exactly fifty bases in 1998, the most he ever had in any single season. That same year he had hit 51 doubles, a feat (50 steals / 50 doubles) that hadn't been seen since Hall of Famer Tris Speaker had 52 steals and 53 doubles with the 1912 Boston Red Sox .
