The St. Louis Browns (1902 through 1953) had exactly three different pitchers lead the American League in shutouts - all three of them had four shutouts, all three of them led the league in 1929. The elite trio - a first of it's kind in the American League - were George Blaeholder, Alvin Crowder and Sam Gray .

George Blaeholder shutout his opponent fourteen times during his career, but the league leading / record setting four in 1929 occurred on June 29 (4-hitter / 0 runs), August 15 (3-hitter / 0 runs), August 23 (5-hitter / 0 runs), and September 8 (Extra Inning / 3-hitter / 0 runs).

The next American League team with three pitchers who each led the league in shutouts was the 2006 Cleveland Indians - a rotation that included CC Sabathia , Jeremy Sowers and Jake Westbrook , each of whom had a league leading two shutouts.

When George Blaeholder stepped onto the field on April 16, 1931 , he was wearing #12 , the first time any St. Louis Browns player ever used the number.
