Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Primarily, I was a fastball pitcher, and nobody could teach me to throw a fastball because nobody on that ballclub could throw any harder than I could. But, I did watch Tommy Bridges to learn how to throw a curveball; I think he had the greatest curveball I've ever seen." - Virgil Trucks in He Tossed No-Hitters Twice in A Season (Baseball Digest : February 1995)

Did you know that Tommy Bridges was actually the third Detroit Tigers pitcher in team history to string together three consecutive 20-win seasons? Bridges (1934-1935-1936) joined Harry Coveleski (1914-1915-1916) and George Mullin (1905-1906-1907) in the "club" and only one pitcher has joined the trio since Tommy, Hall of Fame hurler Hal Newhouser (1944-1945-1946).

Did you know that Tommy Bridges was the first Detroit Tigers pitcher sent to an All-Star Game when he was named to the 1934 All-Star Game ? A year later, Bridges was named to the 1935 All-Star Game , the first Tigers pitcher sent to two Midsummer Classics, the first sent to two consecutively, but in neither contest did he get an opportunity to pitch. In 1936 All-Star Game , Bridges was sent to his third consecutive All-Star Game, was dealing with an injury, and his bullpen mate Schoolboy Rowe was sent as well, and appeared in the game, the first Detroit Tigers pitcher to actually pitch in an All-Star Game.

Did you know that Tommy Bridges was the Detroit Tigers all-time team leader in strikouts when he hung up his cleats in 1946? His career total of 1,674 strikeouts was the eighth highest in American League history at the time and the most in Tigers history, a record he held until 1951.

Tommy Bridges started 362 games and stayed on the mound until completion in more than half of them, throwing 200 complete games across his 16-year career – a total that included nineteen 4-hitters, seven 3-hitters, three 2-hitters, and three 1-hitters ( August 5, 1932 , April 23, 1933 & May 24, 1933 ).

Three years later, also on April 18, , he made his first appearance on the mound, in relief, wearing #10 , the first player in Tigers ' team history to wear it as well.
