Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"On the hurling mound (Guy) Bush has developed a curious 'hop-toad' lunge that is unique. When he really bears down on the ball, he actually springs forward and finishes up in a squat position like a catcher reaching for a low pitch. This freakish hop forward would be impossible to many pitchers. Bush can do it by virtue of his lithe and wiry build, his long thin legs." - Writer F.C. Lane in Baseball Magazine (November 1930)

Guy Bush was both a starting pitcher and relief pitcher across his big league career and when he was traded away from the Chicago Cubs , The Mississippi Mudcat had 152 Cubbie wins (and 101 losses). As of this date, only five "North Side" twirlers have more wins: #1. Charlie Root (201 Wins), #2 Mordecai Brown (188 Wins), #3 Bill Hutchison (181 Wins), #4 Larry Corcoran (175 Wins) and #5 Fergie Jenkins (167 Wins).

On November 22, 1934, Guy Bush, Babe Herman and Jim Weaver were traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for future Hall of Famer Freddie Lindstrom and Larry French . Bush spent only two years with the Buccos, became a journeyman hurler after that, but pitched in a contest on May 25, 1935 , that forever etched his name into the baseball trivia books. That particular day, Babe Ruth hit three home runs, the last three of his career:

Babe Ruth's Last Home Run(s)

On May 25, 1935 , the Pittsburgh Pirates played the Boston Braves in Babe Ruth's 2,498th career game (there were only five more left in his career). Ruth put on a epic and fitting near finale, going 4-for-4 including three home runs and driving in six runners.

Babe Ruth home run #712 came off pitcher Red Lucas , in the top of the first inning, one runner was on base. Bush was called in to relieve Lucas that same inning, but didn't fare much better against The Bambino .

Babe Ruth home run #713 was two short innings later, in the third inning, another batter was on base, the Cubs were now ahead 4-0. The call to the bullpen had already been made early, so Bush stayed in to do his best.

Babe Ruth home run #714 was a mammoth solo shot off Bush in the seventh inning. It was the first home run to clear the right field grandstands at Forbes Field and was measured by the media as a 600-foot bomb.
